My introduction to Turkey dates back to the 90s, a trip from the USA through Istanbul with my dad and brother. Though only a brief city tour, my dad's playful rendition of "Istanbul (not Constantinople)" by They Might Be Giants made the experience memorable 🕌
You know, when you are 12, you are not particularly interested in the world’s history or the biography of leaders 🙈🙆♀️
However, I am deeply grateful to my dad that he was able to evoke my interest in the science history. His story about Constantinople, which was later conquered and renamed to Istanbul, captivated me 🫶🏻
It sparked a keen interest in studying historical periods, key players, and the pivotal events shaping them.
This passion inspired my art series, "Magnificent Century," delving into the rise and fall of the Ottoman Empire, especially focusing on the influential role of women during that era.
Hurrem Sultan, a trailblazer for female influence in the empire, inspired me to portray her and the men of her "harem" in my paintings.
